My Films of 2020

This has been my worst year for seeing new films in a long time. The reason is mainly the obvious one; the pandemic and the closure of cinemas for most of the year put a major crimp on new films in general and my ability to see them. I think I only managed to get to a cinema a couple of times in January and February then once on their re-opening in August. So, all in all, I struggled to get a solid ten films released in the UK in 2020 together. Certainly, the top five would be strong contenders even if I did have a full movie-going year.

  1. Tenet (Written and directed by Christopher Nolan)
  2. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin)
  3. Mank (Written by Jack Fincher, directed by David Fincher)
  4. Uncut Gems (Written by Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie)
  5. 1917 (Written by Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, directed by Sam Mendes)
  6. Jojo Rabbit (Written and directed by Taika Waititi)
  7. Richard Jewell (Written by Billy Ray, directed by Clint Eastwood)
  8. Days of the Bagnold Summer (Written by Lisa Owens, directed by Simon Bird)
  9. The Lighthouse (Written by Robert Eggers and Max Eggers, directed by Robert Eggers)
  10. The 40 Year Old Version (Written and directed by Radha Blank)
